Sam is the son of Yeller, and as such, Savage Sam was the sequel to Disney's Old Yeller. Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran return as Travis and Arliss Coates, and Marta took over for Beverly Washburn as Lisbeth Searcy.

Based on Fred Gipson's book, the Coates boys and Lisbeth are captured by renegade Indians, and Uncle Beck Coates and Sam must track and rescue them. Wildcats, wolves, Indians and the unforgiving frontier stand in the way, but Sam is Yeller's son - he will persevere!

This was Marta's first leap from television to the movies, landing a substantial part in a high profile sequel six years after Disney's first and arguably finest live action film Old Yeller. Since the cast had aged 6 years, Travis and Lisbeth have a romantic subplot running. Marta is delightful as Lisbeth, the flirtatious yet substantive frontier maiden.
